The monthly program “Introduction to Buddhism” kicks off at DKCLI.

Introduction to Buddhism, the first monthly Dharma program initiated by Dzongsar Khyentse ChokyiLodro Institute got under way on 8th August 2018, with the first teaching bestowedby Kyabje Dungsey Aviktrita Vajra Rinpoche, inside the main temple, Tsuglakhang Kalzang Chokyi Jungney, as requested. Public from neighboring settlements and students from nearby schools attended the teaching.

Kyabje Dungsey Avikrita Vajra Rinpoche introduced the topic of the importance of understanding the Buddha Dharma by telling the gathering that the study and practice of Buddha Dharma is not just for nuns and monks, but for everyone, including the laity, irrespective of gender. He explained that there is not a single sentient being that doesn’t want to be happy. In order to have happiness, one has to cultivate the right causes of happiness, which entails knowing how to go about cultivating them. Tibetans have been ancestrally very devoted Buddhists and it is crucial for them to understand what makes one a Buddhist, the Three Jewels of refuge, cause and effect, and the defects of cyclic existence. Rinpoche also talked about the paramount importance of having knowledge about refuge, as the refuge vow is what differentiates Buddhists from non-Buddhists.

In the actual phase of introduction to Buddhism, Rinpoche shed light on the Four Thoughts that Change the Mind: the difficulty of obtaining a human form endowed with freedoms and advantages, death and impermanence, karmic cause and fruition and the imperfections of samsara. Rinpoche also explained how to identify the Three Jewels of refuge, and the meaning and procedures of taking refuge by giving examples, thereby making these concepts much simpler and easier to grasp.

This monthly program, which is the outcome of discussions between Dzongsar Khyentse Chokyi Lodro Institute and the main stakeholders of Bir and Chauntra, is intended for the people living in the vicinity of DKCLI, so that they will be able to understand Buddhist views and ways, know how to practise Dharma in one’s life, and be able guide offspring in accordance with Buddhist values, without necessarily having to study major Buddhist treatises.
