The eighth abbot, Minyak Damchoe


The eighth abbot of Dzongsar Khamje Shedra is Minyak Damchoe, from Minyak region of Kham, and he is a monk from Lhakhang monastery founded by Chogyel Phagpa. He is known for his exemplary ethical observation, and at a very tender age went to Ngor Aewam Monastery in central Tibet, making many pilgrimages there. Upon returning to Kham, he decided to study and got himself enrolled at Khamje Shedra, where he studied for eight years and served as review teacher for four years. He is student of both Khenpo Rinchen and Dosib Thupten.

From Manjushree Jamyamg Khyentse Chokyi Lodoe, he received two traditions of Lamdre, Treasury of instructions, Compendium of Saddhana, etc. After spending few years in retreat at his birthplace, in 1951, he was invited by Chokyi Lodoe to serve as the abbot of the Shedra. He resigned from the post once Chokyi Lodoe left Tibet, and gradually was imprisoned and died in prison during the following political upheaval.
